Nikon celebrates the production of 100 Million Nikkor lenses by announcing a new premium medium telephoto lens.
“Surpassing the 100 million lenses produced milestone is a great honour and a testament to the photographers who both love and rely on NIKKOR glass to get the job done,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.
The new Nikon lens is a 105mm prime lens with a wide f/1.4 maximum aperture suitable for full-frame (FX-format) cameras. The NIKKOR f/1.4 lens is one of Nikon’s Gold Ring Series of lenses, which include only premium primes with Nano Crystal Coat and pro-grade build quality. As befits a premium lens there are seals and gaskets to resist dust and moisture. Flourine coatings on the front and rear lens elements make it easier to clean off dirt and smudges.
The 105mm f/1.4 features Nikon’s electromagnetic aperture control technology to help achieve consistent exposures, especially when high-speed continuous shooting. The aperture of dSLR lenses is held wide open until the shutter is released. Then the aperture changes to the size opening calculated by the exposure meter to produce the best exposure. Traditionally this is accomplished by a mechanical lever link between the camera and the lens. This is another area where the old technology inherited from film SLRs is being replaced by electronics. This does restrict the lens to newer cameras that support the electronic aperture control. See the list from Nikon at the bottom of the page.
The focal length of this new NIKKOR lens is suited for portraiture, providing a flattering compression to subjects with a sultry bokeh. The appearance of the bokeh is enhanced by using nine aperture blades to provide pleasing circular shapes in the out of focus area.
Adorama expects the lens to be available for shipping in late September, but they can pre-ordered.
