The new Fujifilm X-T2 promises photographers a realistic alternative to conventional dSLRs. The X-T2 is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses that takes the viewfinder seriously.
The design of most mirrorless cameras ignores the viewfinder. Photographers have to rely on the rear screen to see the view through the camera’s lens.
Many camera manufacturers embrace the mirrorless camera philosophy for interchangeable lens cameras to reduce the cost of the camera. The reduction in camera body size and weight due to the removal of the reflex mirror becomes insignificant when a lens is attached. The Fujifilm approach is providing a 21st century alternative to the mechanical system.
Fujifilm has persevered developing versions of electronic versions rather than the conventional optical viewfinder of dSLRS using a moving reflex mirror. The X-T2 has an OLED Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). OLED displays are considered the best screens for smart phones and High Dynamic Range televisions, suggesting the X-T2’s EVF will be very good.
The main advantage of a using the viewfinder is it is the best way to hold the camera steady without using a tripod. With modern Autofocus systems the viewfinder is not essential for accurate focusing. If the OLED EVFs are not yet as good as conventional optical systems they are still useful for the main function of composing photographs and displaying camera information to photographers. Otherwise, the X-T2 is similar to any good APS-C size dSLR.
Fujifilm highlight the new autofocus system in their X-T2, often a weak point in the mirrorless design. The large mirror box in conventional DSLR designs offers room for the autofocus sensors. Doing away with the mirror box reduces the space for the normal autofocus system. Mirrorless designs need to use the digital sensor for autofocus as well as for viewing and recording the image.
Fujifilm say in the X-T2 they have significantly improved the AF-C, or continuous focus system. According to Fujifilm the X-T2 uses the fast Phase detection AF method and motion predictive AF for continuous shooting up to 8 frames per second (fps). If the optional grip is fitted then this continuous shooting speed rise to 11fps with extra power from the Booster Grip.
The X-T2 offers a number of options for photographers to adapt the autofocus system to the type of movement of the subject.
The new X-T2 has upgraded video capabilities, now capable of recording in the latest 4K high-resolution format. As with all dSLR video recording there is a time limit on recording For the X-T2 it is up to a maximum of 29 minutes, depending on the resolution chosen. Maximum resolution video can only record for approximately 10 minutes. For longer videos shooting needs to be arranged in a series of short takes.
The camera body is splash and dust resistant, but also importantly Fujifilm offer a number of weather-resistant lenses in their X mount format so the whole package is suitable for adverse weather conditions that offer opportunities for spectacular photographs.
Despite their name and history, Fujifilm has considerable experience in their commercial digital photography printing equipment so they understand digital imaging hardware.
Fujifilm has increased the resolution of the X-T2 up to 24.3MP up from 16MP in the X-T1. It is an APS-C size CMOS Sensor, the same size as most dSLRs. The resolution is as good as the best APS-C size dSLRs and the lack of a low pass filter on the front of the sensor helps get the most from the new sensor.
Fujifilm has increased the sensitivity of the X-T2 over the older X-T1. The new camera has a normal ISO range from 200 to 128000, but there are extended settings from 100 up to 51200, which is comparable most APS-C cameras.
A new top end hot shoe flash unit for the X series cameras. It is capable of High Speed Flash sync so photographers are not limited to slower shutter speeds for flash photography and has a Guide number of 50 (ISO100?m) / 164 (ISO100·ft)
The accessory grip adds controls and shutter release for vertical shooting with extra batteries. As well as prolonging shooting time the X-T2 uses the extra batteries in the grip to boost performance for continuous shooting.
The Fujifilm X-T2 is not about selling a cut-price compact camera. Instead, it is a view of the near future of quality dSLR cameras.
